Fort Irwin

Fort Irwin in California houses a world-class center for our soldiers in the Mojave Dessert in northern San Bernardino County in California. Fort Irwin is especially famous for its' exquisite dessert training, multiple recreational opportunities and history.

Fort Irwin's history goes back to the time when the Indians of Lake Mojave were believed to live there. The Mormon trail, the path that links Utah to California, goes through the Mojave Dessert. This was also one of the first places Europeans had contact with the Native Americans. Years later, during the California Gold Rush, the area was a land of prosperous trade but also stealing by all those that traveled through the trails in search of gold. The area continued to grow when valuable minerals were found in Death Valley and mining operations began to flourish. Now the site is used for the premier training center for the National Guard and other reserve components. Since the September 11th attacks the National Training Center (NTC) switched its' focus to counterinsurgency operations to make soldiers ready for the battlefield.

Because Fort Irwin has recently deployed so many soldiers, their commitment to the families of these soldiers is of utmost importance. The community works as a whole providing entertainment for families, helping families move to the area and finding them housing, and holding a variety of community events and activities for soldiers and their families.
