Military Homes Service Appreciation Scholarship
Military Homes.com is proud to present our first annual Military Service Appreciation Scholarship. Our goal is to say thanks to active duty armed forces personnel, armed forces veterans, and members of their families.
Students are required to write a 2-3 page essay related to their military experience or that of their family members. Some topic ideas would be a general essay on what your time in the military meant to you or a meaningful event that changed you as a person.
The scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students that currently are attending a four-year university on a full-time or part-time basis or those that will be beginning in fall 2009. No specific major, degree, or emphasis area is required. Two non-renewable scholarships are given each semester for $1000 each. The applicant must have served in the military or be the child of someone who did.
The deadlines for 2009 scholarships are:
- May 1, 2009
Fall 2009 Scholarship Winners
Vu Nguyen Ho and Shirley LaForce-Gillians emerged as the winners of the first Military Homes Service Appreciation Scholarship. The scholarship program, funded entirely by the employees of MilitaryHomes.com, provides each winner with $1,000 in support for the fall semester.
Vu is a graduate of the University of California-Berkeley and spent time in the elite Force Recon, the Marine Corps Special Forces Unit. He served in Iraq and starting in the Fall, he will begin working on his MBA at Yale University.
Shirley is also a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and plans to continue her graduate studies at Mercery University, pursuing a master's degree in counseling. For her day job, Shirley works full time for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Atlanta, counseling veterans who have just returned from Iraq.
The staff of Military Homes was extremely impressed by each entry and we encourage you to apply for our next scholarship round.
