Washington is proud to be home to Fort Lewis, McChord Air Force Base, and Naval Station Everett. Many retired military members stick around Tacoma and Oak Harbor well after their service because of the beautiful scenery of the Northwest United States.

As of October 2010, Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base have become a joint base Lewis-McChord. There are approximately 31,000 military at Fort Lewis and over 3,100 military members at McChord Air Force Base. Fort Lewis is just a 20 minute commute from Tacoma, Washington and operates five elementary schools on post. McChord Air Force Base operates one elementary school run by the Clover Park School District and middle schoolers attend Woodbrook middle school while high schoolers on base attend Clover Park High School.

Naval Station Everett, situated on Puget Sound, is about a 20 minute commute from Everett, Washington. The median home price in Everett is $257,710. Housing on the base has now been privatized but many choose to live off base in Everett.
